Why Multiple Crashes Sometimes Occur in the Same Area
When a serious crash occurs on a busy roadway, nearby traffic patterns can change quickly. Drivers may slow suddenly, merge into fewer lanes, or attempt to leave the roadway to avoid the scene. These rapid changes can increase the risk of additional crashes in surrounding areas.
Traffic congestion also tends to build quickly near major incidents. When vehicles move at different speeds or stop unexpectedly, the chance of rear-end collisions and secondary crashes can rise. Reduced visibility from emergency lights, damaged vehicles, or stopped traffic can further affect driver awareness.
Roadways near highway interchanges or busy corridors may see these chain reactions more often because large volumes of vehicles pass through the same area. Maintaining a safe following distance and reducing speed when approaching crash scenes can help lower the risk of additional incidents.
