How Hit-and-Run Crashes During Roadside Stops Increase Risk
Roadside emergencies, such as changing a flat tire, place people in vulnerable positions near moving traffic. At night, visibility is often reduced, making it harder for drivers to notice pedestrians or vehicles stopped along the roadway.
Hit-and-run crashes add further challenges because the driver leaves the scene, delaying emergency response and complicating investigations. Authorities typically review surveillance footage, vehicle debris, and witness accounts to identify suspect vehicles.
High-speed roads or multi-lane streets like major urban corridors can increase the danger during roadside stops, especially when vehicles pass close to active lanes. Safety experts often advise remaining as far from traffic lanes as possible while waiting for assistance in such situations.
