Lindenhurst, NY (July 16, 2026) – An 8-year-old girl suffered serious injuries on Tuesday afternoon, July 14, after she and another pedestrian were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Wellwood Avenue and Spiegelhagen Street in Lindenhurst.

According to Suffolk County police, the incident happened around 2:34 p.m. when a 2010 Chrysler van driven by a 62-year-old woman from Amityville was traveling west on Spiegelhagen Street and turned left onto Wellwood Avenue, hitting two pedestrians.

The child, who is from Lindenhurst, was taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A 20-year-old Lindenhurst woman was also transported to the same hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The van driver was not hurt.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. We extend our thoughts to the injured pedestrians and wish them both a full and speedy recovery.

What Happens During a Pedestrian Crash Investigation?

Pedestrian crashes require a detailed investigation because they involve determining the movements of both the vehicle and the pedestrians immediately before impact. Investigators may review roadway evidence, traffic signals, crosswalk markings, surveillance footage, and witness statements to establish the sequence of events.

Intersections can pose additional risks due to turning vehicles, multiple traffic movements, and pedestrian crossings occurring simultaneously. Drivers are generally expected to remain alert for people crossing the street, particularly when making left or right turns.

When a child is involved, emergency responders prioritize rapid medical care while investigators work to document the scene. The investigation’s findings can help determine whether any contributing factors played a role in the incident.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
