Chula Vista, CA (March 18, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash caused lane closures early on Wednesday morning, March 18, along Interstate 805 southbound in Chula Vista.
Emergency units responded to the scene just north of Telegraph Canyon Road around 5:30 a.m. Reports indicated that at least three vehicles were involved, including a big rig. One of the vehicles came to rest sideways in the traffic lanes, creating a hazard for passing drivers.
A diesel spill was also reported after the truck’s fuel tank was punctured during the crash. As a result, the two right lanes were temporarily shut down while crews worked to clear the roadway and contain the spill. All lanes have since reopened.
Details regarding the extent of injuries have not been confirmed at this time. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they are provided.
We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in the crash.
How Fuel Spills Can Impact Highway Crash Scenes
When a crash involves a large truck, fuel spills can become a major concern. Diesel or other fluids leaking onto the roadway can create slippery conditions, increasing the risk of additional crashes if not handled quickly.
Cleanup efforts often require specialized materials to absorb and contain the spill. Crews may need to block off lanes to safely manage the situation and prevent the fuel from spreading further.
Vehicles positioned sideways or blocking lanes can also disrupt traffic flow and increase congestion. These types of incidents often take longer to clear due to both the crash damage and the need to address hazardous materials on the road.
