How Investigators Track Vehicles After Hit-and-Run Crashes
After a hit-and-run collision, investigators often work quickly to identify the fleeing vehicle before it leaves the surrounding area. Witness descriptions, roadway cameras, and automated license plate reader systems may help track a suspect vehicle’s direction of travel.
In some cases, investigators compare vehicle damage reports and traffic camera footage from nearby intersections to piece together the vehicle’s movements after the crash. Real-time sightings from officers and other agencies can also help locate the driver.
When injuries are involved, emergency crews focus on assisting victims while investigators preserve evidence at the scene. Debris, paint transfer, and vehicle parts left behind may later help connect a suspect vehicle to the collision.
