What Makes Head-On Crashes Especially Dangerous on Rural Highways
Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of roadway crashes. When two vehicles strike each other from opposite directions, the combined force can result in life-threatening injuries.
Rural highways like AL 9 often have fewer lanes and limited separation between opposing traffic. Curves, hills, and changing road conditions can reduce visibility and reaction time. Even a brief drift across the center line can lead to a serious crash.
Traffic volume may be lighter in rural areas, but speeds are often higher. This combination can increase the impact when a collision occurs. Reviewing roadway design, driver actions, and environmental conditions helps provide a clearer picture of how these crashes unfold.
