Whatcom County, WA (May 17, 2026) – A 62-year-old Ferndale man died on Saturday morning, May 16, following a head-on crash on Mt. Baker Highway (State Route 542) near milepost 19, north of Bell Creek Road.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash occurred just after 10:30 a.m. when a 2009 Mazda 3 driven by Allen York was traveling westbound. Investigators said a 1992 Toyota 4Runner driven by 27-year-old Jayde Laux of Maple Falls was traveling eastbound at the same time.
Troopers reported that York crossed the center line and struck the eastbound vehicle head-on. Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway, blocking traffic in both directions.
York died at the scene. Officials said he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Laux was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph’s Medical Center with serious injuries.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of York and hope for the recovery of the injured driver.
How Head-On Crashes Are Analyzed
Head-on crashes are often studied by reviewing lane position, vehicle paths, and roadway markings before impact. Even a brief crossing into oncoming traffic can lead to severe outcomes at highway speeds.
Investigators also examine debris patterns, damage points, and road conditions to rebuild how the collision occurred. These details help establish timing and direction for both vehicles.
When impairment is not involved, factors like distraction, fatigue, or mechanical issues may be considered during the review process.
