Why Do Pedestrian Crashes on Rural Highways Lead to Fatalities?
Pedestrian incidents on rural highways such as U.S. 77 frequently involve high travel speeds and limited lighting, particularly during evening hours. Unlike urban corridors, these roadways typically lack sidewalks, controlled crossings, or overhead illumination, increasing the risk for individuals on foot.
When a vehicle traveling at highway speed strikes a pedestrian, the resulting injuries are often catastrophic due to the force of impact and the absence of protective barriers. Investigators will generally evaluate visibility conditions, roadway geometry, driver reaction time, and the pedestrian’s location at the time of the collision.
