Why Are Wrong-Way Crashes So Often Fatal?
Wrong-way collisions frequently result in severe or fatal outcomes because they typically involve head-on impacts at combined highway speeds. Drivers traveling in the correct direction often have limited time to recognize and react to an oncoming vehicle in their lane, especially during overnight hours when visibility may be reduced.
The force generated in a head-on crash is substantially greater than in same-direction collisions, increasing the likelihood of catastrophic injury. Investigators commonly examine roadway signage, lighting conditions, impairment factors, and entry points to determine how a vehicle entered opposing traffic lanes.
Law enforcement agencies continue to analyze evidence in serious wrong-way incidents to establish contributing factors and determine whether criminal charges may be appropriate.
