Chicago, IL (May 28, 2026) – At least 20 people were hurt Wednesday evening when a collision involving two CTA buses and a red sedan occurred near Lake Street and Homan Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. The accident was reported around 6:42 p.m.
According to preliminary information from the CTA, a sedan driver hit a southbound bus near the intersection, which then triggered a secondary impact with a northbound bus traveling in the opposite direction. Witnesses at the scene said the sedan ran a red light at Homan Avenue before the wreck, and several people present also reported that police arrested the sedan’s driver.
Of the 20 people hurt, 11 were taken to hospitals. One person was in critical condition, five were in serious condition, and five were in good condition. Nine others were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. Those taken to a hospital included the sedan driver, one of the bus drivers, and seven passengers.
The identities of those involved have not yet been publicly released. The case remains open as investigators work to establish a full account of what took place. We are holding all those hurt in our thoughts as they receive care and begin to recover.
What Are the Common Causes and Risks of Multi-Vehicle Bus Crashes at Urban Intersections?
City bus crashes at busy intersections often involve a combination of factors: driver behavior, signal timing, and the sheer size of the vehicles at play. Buses carry far more passengers than a typical car, which means a single collision can result in a large number of people being hurt at once. When a bus is struck and then pushed into a second vehicle, the number of those affected can multiply quickly.
Red-light violations are among the most common triggers for serious intersection crashes in urban settings. A vehicle entering an intersection against the signal gives other drivers almost no time to react, particularly when large transit vehicles are moving through on a green light. The size and weight of buses means that even a moderate impact can cause significant harm to those inside.
