Cummington, MA (January 20, 2026) – Authorities have released tragic new details following the crash reported Monday morning at the intersection of Route 9 and Fairgrounds Rd in Cummington, which was initially covered by Local Accident Reports. The incident, involving a Toyota Corolla and a box truck, has now been confirmed to have resulted in one fatality and one serious injury.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 9:26 a.m. after reports of a two-vehicle collision. According to investigators, the Toyota was traveling northbound on Fairgrounds Rd when it entered the intersection and was struck by an eastbound box truck on Route 9.
The driver of the Toyota, an 87-year-old woman, sadly died at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. A front-seat passenger in the vehicle was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the box truck was unharmed and remained at the scene to cooperate with responding officials.
Multiple investigative units are now involved, including the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and local Cummington authorities.
