Traffic Impacts After Fatal Motorcycle Crashes on Tollways
Fatal motorcycle crashes on tollways can cause major delays because these roads carry fast-moving traffic and high vehicle volumes. Emergency units might need to close several lanes to protect the scene and assist those involved.
Motorcycle riders face a higher risk of severe injury during crashes because they have less protection than people inside cars. A collision can throw a rider from the motorcycle or lead to impact with nearby barriers or roadway surfaces.
Ramp closures can also affect surrounding traffic. When drivers are diverted from a major tollway, backups may spread to nearby exits, feeder roads, and connecting highways until lanes reopen.
