Davis, CA (May 8, 2026) – A woman died on Thursday afternoon, May 7, after being thrown from a motorcycle and struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 80 in Davis. The crash happened just before 2:40 p.m., eastbound near Richards Boulevard during moderate to heavy traffic.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling behind a pickup truck that slowed nearly to a stop due to changing traffic conditions. The motorcycle rider was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the pickup.
The passenger was ejected from the motorcycle on impact and landed in an adjacent lane, where she was struck by a semi-truck; she died at the scene from her injuries.
Officials said all involved drivers remained at the scene following the crash, and also stated that neither drugs nor alcohol is suspected to be a factor.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they are provided.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased woman.
Why Motorcycle Passenger Ejections Can Be Especially Dangerous in Traffic Crashes
Motorcycle passengers are at higher risk of severe injury when a crash causes them to be thrown from the vehicle. Unlike enclosed vehicles, motorcycles offer little physical protection during sudden stops or impacts.
In multi-lane freeway traffic, ejected riders or passengers can be exposed to additional hazards from nearby vehicles. Even when the initial collision occurs at lower speeds, secondary impacts from other lanes can result in fatal injuries. Investigators often examine traffic flow, braking distance, and lane spacing to understand how these incidents unfold.
Road conditions and vehicle positioning at the time of the crash can also play a role in determining how and why a passenger was ejected into active traffic lanes.
