Dayton, OH (February 22, 2026) – A man was injured Sunday morning in a crash involving a semi and a box truck on northbound I-71 near SR 123 in Warren County. Emergency units responded to the scene around 6:15 a.m. near milepost 33 after reports of a serious collision.
According to officials, a box truck had been left on the right shoulder due to a mechanical issue. A semi traveling northbound moved onto the shoulder and struck the abandoned vehicle. The impact pushed the box truck off the roadway, where it overturned and came to rest on its top.
The semi driver, a 64-year-old man, was taken by medics to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries. No additional injuries were reported, and further details about his condition have not been released.
The crash remains under active investigation. We are keeping the injured driver in our thoughts as he recovers.
What Factors Are Reviewed in Highway Shoulder Crashes?
Highway crashes involving vehicles stopped on the shoulder often raise questions about visibility and driver awareness. On roads like I-71, traffic typically moves at high speeds, which can reduce reaction time if a vehicle drifts from its lane.
When a disabled vehicle is parked on the shoulder, its position, hazard lights, and surrounding lighting conditions may all be examined. Early morning hours can bring lower light levels that affect visibility. Investigators also consider roadway design, traffic flow, and whether drivers had enough space to maneuver safely. Collisions involving large commercial vehicles can result in significant damage due to their size and weight, especially when one vehicle is stationary at the time of impact.
