Deadwood, SD (March 28, 2026) – One person was killed, and others were seriously injured following a four-vehicle crash on Friday evening, March 27, near Deadwood, according to authorities.
Preliminary reports from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicate the crash occurred about one mile east of Deadwood on US Highway 14A. A 2019 Chevrolet Suburban traveling eastbound reportedly crossed the centerline and sideswiped an oncoming 2010 Ford Flex.
The impact caused the Ford Flex to spin and come to rest on the centerline. The Suburban then collided head-on with an oncoming Ford F-150, which was forced off the roadway into a ditch. The Suburban continued and struck a GMC Sierra before coming to rest in the westbound passing lane.
The driver of the Suburban was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Ford F-150 sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City for treatment.
Authorities said the driver and passenger of the Ford Flex, as well as the driver of the GMC Sierra, were not injured in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation, and the names of those involved have not yet been released pending family notification.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and wish a full recovery to those injured.
What Makes Multi-Vehicle Crashes Particularly Dangerous?
Multi-vehicle crashes can quickly escalate in severity due to the chain-reaction nature of the collisions.
When one vehicle loses control or crosses into oncoming traffic, it can trigger multiple impacts involving several vehicles in a short period of time. These crashes often occur on highways where speeds are higher, increasing the impact force.
Such incidents can also make it more difficult for drivers to react in time to avoid secondary collisions, leading to more injuries and extensive roadway disruptions.
