Lincoln, KS (April 25, 2026) – Two people were killed in a residential fire on Thursday, April 23, in Lincoln after flames spread through multiple structures and caused extensive damage.
The fire occurred in the 300 block of East Yauger Street, according to the Kansas State Fire Marshal. Investigators said the fire involved multiple structures and quickly grew due to strong winds, threatening nearby homes and garages.
Fire crews were aware that at least two people may have been inside the residence. Attempts to make contact were unsuccessful as conditions worsened. The attached garage eventually ignited, and the fire spread to a nearby home and additional garage structures, damaging multiple vehicles in the area.
An 82-year-old woman and a 63-year-old woman were found deceased inside the residence. Four dogs also died in the fire. Officials reported that the home sustained catastrophic damage, with much of the roof and walls collapsing and the second story falling into the first floor.
Autopsies are scheduled for both victims. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The incident remains under review by authorities.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy.
How Wind Conditions Can Intensify Residential Fires
Strong winds can significantly increase the spread and severity of structure fires. Wind can push flames into new areas of a building, allowing fire to reach roofs, attics, and attached structures more quickly than in calm conditions.
In residential areas, garages and neighboring homes can become vulnerable when flames are carried by the wind. This can lead to multiple structures becoming involved within a short period of time.
Once fire spreads into structural framing, collapse risks increase. Roof failure and wall instability are common in advanced fire conditions, especially when flames burn through load-bearing materials.
