Health Risks Commonly Seen After House Fires
House fires can cause serious injuries even when people escape the flames. Smoke inhalation is one of the main dangers because smoke can affect breathing and reduce oxygen levels. A person may need hospital care if they breathe in heavy smoke.
Burn injuries can also happen while escaping or helping others leave the home. Hands, arms, and the face are often exposed during a fire. Even smaller burns may need medical treatment to reduce pain and prevent infection.
Children can be more sensitive to smoke because their lungs are still developing. After a fire, medical teams might check breathing, oxygen levels, burns, and signs of shock. Homes may also be unsafe afterward because of smoke, heat, and structural damage.
