Detroit, MI (April 19, 2026) – A deadly crash in a construction zone on the city’s northwest side left one man dead and another critically hurt early Sunday morning, April 19. The incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. along the southbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway near Wyoming Avenue.
According to reports, road work was underway at the time, with the left and middle lanes blocked as crews placed cones. A construction vehicle was positioned in the left lane. Workers at the scene noticed a car traveling at a high speed in that same lane just before impact.
The vehicle struck the rear of the construction truck. Emergency units arrived shortly after and pronounced the 23-year-old driver dead at the scene. A 30-year-old man from Southfield, who was riding as a passenger, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
Authorities temporarily shut down the freeway while crews worked the scene and cleared the wreckage. The roadway has since reopened to traffic. The identity of the driver has not been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Construction Zones Increase the Risk of Highway Crashes
Construction zones often change normal traffic patterns, which can catch drivers off guard. Lanes may be closed or shifted, and large equipment is sometimes parked close to moving traffic. These conditions require drivers to slow down and stay alert at all times.
Speeding is one of the most common factors in work zone crashes. Reduced reaction time makes it harder to avoid sudden obstacles, such as stopped vehicles or workers placing cones. Even a small increase in speed can greatly raise the risk of a serious impact.
Drivers are also expected to follow posted signs and merge carefully when lanes are reduced. Paying close attention and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles can help lower the chances of a crash in these areas.
