Honolulu, HI (May 22, 2026) – A low-hanging cable snagged by a passing pickup truck sent two workers to the hospital Thursday morning near Castle Junction on Kalanianaole Hwy and Auloa Rd. The truck, which had a rack mounted on it, caught the cable and pulled it down, hurting both men on the ground.
Emergency medical services confirmed both workers, ages 20 and 35, were taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with workers on the ground and visible injuries reported by bystanders.
The disruption caused significant gridlock throughout Windward Oahu and the commuters reported travel times stretching from 15 minutes to well over an hour. In addition, Hawaiian Telcom confirmed the downed line was theirs and said fewer than 20 customers lost service as a result. The company expects to restore service within the week.
The cause of the cable hanging low near the roadway is still under review. We wish the two workers a full and speedy recovery.
What Happens When a Utility Line Falls on a Public Road in Hawaii?
When a utility line comes down on or near a road, it can create hazards that go well beyond traffic. Downed cables may still carry electrical current or cause physical danger to anyone nearby, which is why roads are often closed quickly when this happens. In Hawaii, utility companies are generally responsible for securing and repairing their lines, and they coordinate with local agencies to restore service. Workers near active utility lines are at particular risk because a sudden drop can happen with little warning. For drivers, a vehicle with any elevated equipment, racks, antennas, or cargo, poses an especially high risk of snagging overhead lines in areas where clearance is limited. Recovery for those hurt in these situations can vary widely depending on the nature and severity of the injuries.
