Why High-Speed Pursuits Often Result in Serious Crashes
High-speed pursuits can create dangerous conditions for everyone on the road. As vehicle speeds increase, drivers have less time to react to traffic, roadway changes, and unexpected obstacles. Even a small steering correction or loss of traction can lead to a crash, especially on highways where vehicles are traveling at elevated speeds.
Crashes involving fleeing vehicles frequently result in impacts with guardrails, medians, or other roadside structures. When a vehicle leaves its lane at high speed, the force of a collision can increase the likelihood of injuries. Safety experts often note that factors such as driver inexperience, distraction, fatigue, and impaired judgment can further reduce a driver’s ability to maintain control. These risks become greater when a vehicle is traveling well above the posted speed limit.
