Appleton, WI (June 19, 2026) – One person lost their life on Thursday after a loaded dump truck rolled onto another vehicle along E. Calumet St in Appleton.

According to police, the fatal collision occurred around noon when a heavy-duty tow truck was exiting northbound Wisconsin Highway 441 onto E. Calumet St via an off-ramp. The wrecker left the roadway and entered the median, causing the dump truck it was towing to detach. The truck carrying sand then overturned and struck a vehicle stopped in westbound traffic.

The person inside the struck vehicle died as a result of the wreck. Additional details about the deceased have not yet been released.

As of 5 p.m. Thursday, E. Calumet St remained closed between Wisconsin Highway 441 and Stoney Brook Drive. The northbound Calumet Street exit from northbound Highway 441 also remained closed for traffic heading toward eastbound E. Calumet St.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the fatal accident and are expected to release more information as the review progresses. Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends grieving this loss.

Why Detached Commercial Vehicles Can Create Serious Road Hazards

Commercial vehicles and the equipment they tow are subject to strict securement requirements due to the risks of separation while in motion. When a towed vehicle becomes detached, drivers nearby may have little time to react, especially in areas with heavy traffic or limited escape routes.

Investigators often review towing equipment, connection points, vehicle maintenance records, roadway conditions, and travel paths when examining these types of collisions. The weight of large trucks and their cargo can significantly increase the force involved in a rollover.

Road closures are also common after major truck-related crashes because crews may need time to remove debris, recover vehicles, and inspect the roadway. These reviews help establish a clearer understanding of how a commercial vehicle separation occurred and the factors that contributed to the outcome.
