East Hampton, CT (March 14, 2026) – Firefighters responded Friday to a fully involved camper fire on Markham Lane in East Hampton, which spread to a second camper due to strong winds.
Upon arrival, crews found one camper engulfed in flames with a large propane tank actively venting. Additional resources were requested to safely manage the situation. Firefighters deployed multiple handlines and established a water supply from a nearby pond to contain the fire and protect surrounding structures.
State DEEP HazMat personnel and a propane service company assisted in controlling and removing the leaking tanks. One vehicle nearby sustained minor damage from radiant heat, and one person was transported to a local medical facility for evaluation of smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.
Authorities continue to review the incident, and more details may be released as they become available.
We are thinking of those affected as they recover from the smoke exposure.
Safety Measures for Fires Involving Propane Tanks
Fires involving propane tanks can be extremely hazardous because the pressurized fuel can explode if not managed properly. Strong winds can increase the risk by spreading flames to nearby structures or vehicles.
Emergency responders typically isolate the area, establish water supply lines, and work with specialized HazMat and propane teams to safely vent or remove tanks. Smoke inhalation is a common risk for those nearby, and a quick medical evaluation is important even if injuries appear minor.
Proper distance from burning propane tanks and prompt evacuation can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury during such fires.
