The incident remains under review as authorities continue their investigation.
We extend our thoughts to those involved and wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Understanding Left-Turn Crashes at Signalized Intersections
Left-turn movements at busy intersections are among the most common scenarios for injury collisions. These crashes often occur when a driver misjudges the speed or distance of oncoming traffic or attempts a turn from an improper lane position.
Using a straight-only lane to initiate a left turn can create a hazardous situation, as oncoming drivers may not anticipate the maneuver. When a vehicle crosses directly into the path of opposing traffic, the result is often a broadside or angled collision. In some cases, particularly with taller vehicles or SUVs, the impact forces can cause a rollover.
Intersection safety relies heavily on proper lane positioning, adherence to traffic control markings, and accurate gap assessment before turning. Even a brief lapse in judgment can lead to significant consequences.
