Edgartown, MA (January 3, 2026) – Two residents of Edgartown tragically lost their lives after their boat capsized off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, according to officials from the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.
The victims, identified as Patricia Bergeron, 69, and Roy Scheffer, 77, were pulled from the water near Cow Bay, approximately half a mile from shore in Edgartown. Both individuals were brought to land and transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the accident was caused, in part, by a fast-moving weather system that swept through the area, bringing high winds, snow, and sleet. According to the district attorney’s office, the vessel’s propeller had become entangled in a polypropylene-style line, disabling the boat and contributing to the capsizing.
The tragic incident has been described as a “horrible accident,” with no indications of foul play.
We would like to extend our condolences to the families and friends of the deceased victims.
Sudden Weather and Boating Hazards in Massachusetts
Massachusetts waters, particularly off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, are known for their beauty, but also for the sudden shifts in weather that can pose serious dangers to mariners. The accident involving Patricia Bergeron and Roy Scheffer underscores just how quickly conditions can change, even for experienced boaters.
Winter boating presents elevated risks due to cold water temperatures, reduced visibility, and the mechanical vulnerability of vessels during icy or stormy conditions. In this case, a fast-developing storm system, bringing sleet, snow, and strong winds, appears to have contributed to the vessel’s failure and eventual capsizing.
Entanglement of a propeller by rope or debris, especially synthetic materials like polypropylene, can immediately disable a boat’s propulsion, leaving it exposed to waves and wind. With water temperatures dangerously low, hypothermia can set in within minutes, greatly reducing survival chances, even when rescue efforts are swift.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder to all boaters about the importance of preparing for sudden weather events, regularly inspecting equipment, and ensuring safety protocols are followed year-round, regardless of experience.
Patricia Bergeron and Roy Scheffer were both respected members of the Edgartown community. Their loss will be deeply felt across Martha’s Vineyard.
