Why Many Crashes Occur at Roadway Intersections
Intersections bring together vehicles traveling from multiple directions. Drivers may be turning, slowing down, or crossing through the roadway at the same time.
Because of these movements, drivers must quickly judge the speed and distance of other vehicles. Misjudging timing or failing to notice a vehicle approaching from another direction can lead to a collision.
Morning traffic periods may also increase the likelihood of crashes. Commuters traveling to work or school can create heavier traffic flow and more frequent stops and turns.
Road layout, visibility, and traffic control devices such as stop signs or signals can also influence how safely vehicles pass through an intersection. Even a brief lapse in attention may lead to contact between vehicles.
