Colorado Springs, CO (March 19, 2026) – A man was killed after being struck by a vehicle on N Academy Blvd in Colorado Springs.
The incident occurred just before 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, east of Vickers Dr. Emergency units were called to the scene following reports of a pedestrian struck on the busy roadway.
According to initial reports, the victim was crossing N Academy Blvd outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by a northbound vehicle. Authorities noted that it was likely still dark at the time, which may have limited the driver’s visibility.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials reported that the driver did not appear to be impaired. Traffic on southbound Academy was reduced to one lane, while northbound traffic was detoured around the crash site until the scene was cleared just before 9:30 a.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Pedestrian Crashes Are Common in Low-Light Conditions
Pedestrian accidents often occur during early morning or evening hours when lighting is limited. Reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to see people crossing the street, especially outside marked crosswalks.
Crossing away from designated areas increases the risk because drivers may not anticipate pedestrians in unexpected locations. Even brief distractions or reduced sightlines can prevent a driver from reacting in time.
Traffic volume and vehicle speed also affect the severity of these crashes. Heavier or faster-moving traffic gives drivers less time to notice a pedestrian, increasing the risk of serious injury or death.
Street lighting, reflective clothing, and marked crosswalks can help reduce the likelihood of accidents, but pedestrians remain vulnerable in areas where these measures are absent or insufficient.
