Why Some Intersection Crashes Cause Vehicles to Roll Over
Vehicle rollovers can occur when a strong side impact suddenly shifts a car’s balance. When a vehicle is struck on the side, the force may push it to the side and lift its wheels off the ground.
Intersections are common locations for these types of crashes because vehicles often cross each other’s paths. If one vehicle strikes another at an angle, the impact can create enough force to tip the vehicle.
Larger vehicles such as vans or sport utility vehicles may also influence how a collision unfolds. Their height and weight distribution can increase the chance of a rollover when struck from the side.
Speed, vehicle position, and the angle of impact can all affect whether a car remains upright after a crash. Even at moderate speeds, a rollover may occur if the force is directed toward the side of the vehicle.
