How Right-of-Way Violations Can Contribute to Serious Roadway Collisions
Failure-to-yield collisions often occur at intersections where drivers must judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic. When a vehicle enters a roadway without enough clearance, another driver may have little time to avoid contact.
These types of collisions can lead to severe outcomes because vehicles frequently strike one another at angles that transfer significant force to occupants. In some cases, one vehicle may leave the roadway or overturn after contact. Seat belt use can also influence the severity of injuries during a rollover or side-impact crash.
After a serious roadway collision, investigators typically review vehicle positions, roadway markings, driver statements, and physical evidence. This information helps establish the sequence of actions leading up to the collision and provides a clearer picture of how the roadway encounter occurred.
