Fairfax County, VA (January 26, 2026) – A deadly two-vehicle accident on Interstate 495 left one driver dead Saturday night, prompting an active investigation by Virginia State Police.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. along the northbound lanes of I-495 at the Backlick Rd interchange. According to officials, the driver of a sedan attempting to merge onto I-495 from I-395 lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the right side of the roadway. The sedan struck a jersey wall before colliding with a stationary tractor-trailer parked nearby.
Paramedics and fire rescue teams from Fairfax County arrived shortly after the incident and rendered aid to the injured driver of the sedan. That individual was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries but was later pronounced dead. The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed as of Monday morning.
Virginia State Police noted that the crash happened prior to a significant winter storm, and weather is not currently being considered a contributing factor. No updates have been provided regarding the condition of the tractor-trailer driver involved in the collision.
