What Makes Off-Road Recreation Areas Particularly Risky for ATV Riders?
The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area draws thousands of off-road riders every year, and with that volume comes a significant risk of crashes. Sand dunes create unpredictable terrain: hills can obscure oncoming riders, and traction changes quickly depending on the surface. Side-by-sides and dirt bikes handle very differently from each other, and mixing the two in shared riding spaces can make it harder for riders to anticipate each other’s movements. Visibility is another factor, especially near elevated terrain like hills or ridgelines where a rider cresting a peak may not see what’s on the other side until it’s too late. Rider experience, speed, and familiarity with the terrain all contribute to how these crashes unfold in open dune environments.
