Why Trail and Roadway Crossings Can Be Dangerous for Cyclists
Intersections where recreational trails meet busy roads can present serious risks for bicyclists and drivers alike. Cyclists crossing traffic lanes may have limited time to judge vehicle speed, while drivers may not expect someone to enter the roadway suddenly from a trail entrance. These crossings can become especially hazardous when visibility is blocked by trees, signs, or roadside features.
Helmets can help reduce the severity of head injuries during bicycle crashes, particularly when a rider is thrown onto pavement or struck by a moving vehicle. Investigators often review traffic controls, sight distance, and travel speed when examining these collisions. Trail crossings with stop signs or warning markers rely heavily on both cyclists and motorists remaining alert before entering or passing through the intersection.
