Why Median Crossovers on Highways Can Be So Dangerous
Median crossover crashes are among the most serious types of highway traffic collisions because they mostly involve vehicles traveling in opposite directions at high speeds. Even when divided by a median, a loss of control caused by factors such as tire problems, driver distraction, excessive speed, or poor road conditions can allow a vehicle to enter oncoming lanes. The force created in these situations greatly increases the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities.
Early reports typically focus on the number of people involved and the basic sequence of what happened, while later findings may include roadway conditions, vehicle inspections, witness statements, and other evidence that helps explain how the collision unfolded.
