Why Disabled Vehicles on Highways Can Create Dangerous Situations
Disabled vehicles on busy highways can quickly create safety risks for drivers approaching the area. When a large truck or passenger vehicle becomes stranded on the roadside or in a travel lane, other drivers may have limited time to react.
Highway speeds reduce the distance drivers have to slow down or change lanes. Large vehicles such as tractor-trailers can also block sightlines, especially at night or in areas with heavy traffic.
Breakdowns sometimes require drivers to wait for towing services along the roadway. During this time, warning lights, hazard flashers, and reflective markers can help alert approaching traffic.
Many highways include shoulder space designed for disabled vehicles, but not all breakdowns occur in safe locations. When drivers encounter a stopped vehicle ahead, slowing down and moving over when possible can help reduce the chance of a crash.
