Fort Hancock, TX (May 10, 2026) – Four people were hurt in a multi-vehicle accident Saturday evening, May 9, in the Fort Hancock area of Hudspeth County. The crash happened around 7:20 p.m. along Interstate 10 East at Mile Marker 78.
According to initial reports, three vehicles were involved in the collision. One injured person was airlifted from the scene, while three others were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment.
Emergency units temporarily shut down traffic in both directions to allow a medical helicopter to land safely. By about 9 p.m., traffic had resumed in both directions, although eastbound lanes remained limited to one lane for a period of time.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Traffic Delays Often Follow Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Interstate Highways
Multi-vehicle crashes on interstate highways can lead to major traffic disruptions, especially when emergency medical helicopters are needed. In many cases, several lanes must be closed to create enough space for first responders and to protect drivers passing through the area.
Crashes involving multiple vehicles also tend to take longer to clear because damaged cars may block travel lanes or require towing. Medical crews often need additional time to assist injured people and safely move them from the roadway.
Traffic backups can continue even after lanes reopen. Drivers approaching the area may slow down suddenly, which can create congestion for miles. Road conditions, nighttime visibility, and high travel speeds can also make interstate crashes more difficult to manage and clear quickly.
