What Often Leads to Head-on Highway Collisions?
Head-on crashes on highways are among the most severe types of traffic collisions because they involve direct impact between two moving vehicles. These incidents can occur when a driver crosses into oncoming traffic due to distraction, loss of control, or unsafe passing attempts. Rural highways with fewer barriers may also increase the risk of vehicles entering opposing lanes.
Investigators typically examine roadway layout, driver actions before impact, and vehicle damage patterns to determine how the crash occurred. Emergency response reports and witness statements may also help clarify whether speed, visibility, or road conditions contributed. When a vehicle becomes trapped or lanes are blocked, response times and rescue efforts can also influence the severity of injuries sustained in the crash.
