What Factors Affect Nighttime Pedestrian Crashes?
Pedestrian crashes at night often involve reduced visibility. Street lighting, dark clothing, and glare from headlights can make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing the road. Reaction time may be limited, especially on busy city streets.
Intersections can present added risks. Drivers may focus on traffic signals or other vehicles and fail to notice a person entering the roadway. Pedestrians crossing outside of marked crosswalks may also be harder to spot.
Vehicle speed is another key factor. Even at city speeds, the force of impact can cause severe or fatal injuries. Clear sight lines and alert driving are especially critical during late evening hours.
