How Left-Turn Crashes Often Occur at Intersections
Crashes frequently occur when a vehicle attempts to turn left across oncoming traffic. In these situations, drivers must judge the speed and distance of vehicles approaching from the opposite direction.
If the turning driver misjudges the timing, the turning vehicle may move directly into the path of oncoming traffic. This can lead to a side or front-end impact, especially when the other vehicle is traveling at normal roadway speeds.
Intersections without protected turn signals may present a higher risk for these types of collisions. Drivers often rely on gaps in traffic, which can change quickly when multiple vehicles approach at once.
Vehicle position, speed, and reaction time can all influence how these crashes unfold. Even a brief delay in braking or steering may make it difficult to avoid a collision once a vehicle enters the intersection.
