Garner, NC (May 3, 2026) – A hit-and-run crash left two people hurt at a busy Garner intersection. The accident happened around 6:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, along US 70 at Mechanical Blvd near US 401.
Reports show a white Volkswagen SUV was heading west on US 70 when it ran a red light. At the same time, a small blue car was crossing from Mechanical Blvd toward Garner Station Rd. The vehicles collided in the intersection, causing damage and blocking the westbound lanes for nearly an hour.
After the crash, the driver of the Volkswagen got out and ran from the scene on foot. The person was last seen heading toward Raleigh. Emergency units responded and assisted those involved at the scene.
The driver and passenger in the blue car were hurt and taken to a hospital in Raleigh. Their injuries were reported as not life-threatening. No further details about the suspect have been released at this time.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Red-Light Crashes Often Lead to Intersection Injuries
Crashes at intersections often happen when one driver fails to stop at a signal. These accidents can be severe because vehicles may cross paths at full speed, increasing the force of impact.
In many cases, drivers entering an intersection on a green light may not have time to react if another vehicle runs a red light. This can lead to side-impact collisions, which are more likely to cause injuries due to limited protection on the sides of a car.
Traffic signals are designed to control flow and reduce risk, but they depend on drivers following them. When signals are ignored, the chances of a crash increase sharply. Even at lower speeds, these collisions can result in injuries that require hospital care.
