Garrison, MN (February 25, 2026) – A 50-year-old woman died after a two-vehicle crash near Mille Lacs Lake along Highway 169.
The collision occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, near 460th Street. Authorities said a southbound Subaru Impreza lost control while rounding a curve in icy conditions and slid into the northbound lanes.
A northbound Kia Sorrento then struck the Subaru on its side. Both vehicles came to rest on a downward slope in the east ditch.
The Subaru driver, identified as Nicole Freeman of Garrison, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The Kia driver, a 42-year-old man from Isle, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated for his injuries, though further details about his condition were not released.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Nicole Freeman.
How Icy Road Conditions Can Lead to Loss-of-Control Crashes
Winter weather often creates dangerous driving conditions, especially near lakes and open areas where wind and moisture can freeze quickly. Curves in the roadway can become slick, making it harder for drivers to maintain control.
When a vehicle loses traction on ice, it may slide into oncoming traffic or off the road. Even at lower speeds, a sideways impact can cause serious damage because the sides of vehicles offer less protection than the front or rear.
Seat belts reduce the risk of severe injury, but icy surfaces still increase the chance of multi-vehicle crashes. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed and use extra caution when traveling during freezing conditions, particularly on rural highways.
