Montcalm County, MI (May 30, 2026) – A 20-year-old Grand Rapids man was seriously injured Friday after his motorcycle struck the rear of a semi-truck along Interstate 96 near mile marker 78 in Montcalm County.
According to preliminary findings, the motorcycle was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when the rider attempted to pass the truck. During the maneuver, the bike struck the rear of the larger vehicle before colliding with a cable barrier.
The rider was then thrown into the westbound median. Emergency units took the man to a hospital in Lansing for treatment of serious injuries.
No additional details about the accident had been made public as of this report. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. We are keeping the injured rider in our thoughts and wishing him a full recovery.
How Speed Can Increase the Severity of Motorcycle Crashes
Motorcycles offer less physical protection than passenger vehicles, making riders more vulnerable during traffic conflicts. Higher travel speeds can reduce the time available to react to changing road conditions, lane changes, or nearby vehicles.
When a rider loses control or strikes another vehicle, speed can also increase the distance traveled after contact and raise the likelihood of being thrown from the motorcycle. Barriers, medians, and fixed roadside objects may contribute to the seriousness of injuries when secondary contact occurs.
Passing maneuvers require careful judgment of available space, vehicle positioning, and traffic flow. Maintaining a safe following distance and allowing extra room around large trucks can help improve visibility and provide more time to respond to unexpected changes on the roadway.
