Greensboro, NC (April 12, 2026) – One person was killed, and two others were injured after a high-speed crash following a hit-and-run incident in downtown Greensboro early Saturday morning, April 11.
The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. when emergency units responded to a wreck involving a vehicle that left the roadway on South Benbow Road. Investigators said the driver had been involved in a hit-and-run earlier in downtown Greensboro before the fatal crash.
According to preliminary information, 29-year-old Jefferson Lumby Zeledon was driving an Acura RSX when he fled the earlier collision. Authorities said he then drove at a high rate of speed along South Benbow Road. As he approached the T-intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the vehicle traveled off the roadway and struck a parked Chevy Cobalt before flipping into a wooded area.
Zeledon was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers inside the vehicle were taken to hospitals with serious injuries. Their conditions have not been released.
The investigation is ongoing, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our condolences go out to those affected by the crash.
How High-Speed Secondary Crashes Can Escalate After a Hit-and-Run
Crashes that occur after an initial hit-and-run can become more severe when drivers continue traveling at high speeds. Stress, impaired judgment, or attempts to flee can increase risky driving behavior.
When vehicles leave the roadway at high speed, they may strike parked cars, trees, or uneven terrain. These impacts can cause rollovers, which significantly raise the risk of serious injury for everyone inside the vehicle.
Passengers are often at high risk in rollover crashes, especially if the vehicle overturns multiple times or leaves the roadway entirely. Emergency response in these situations often focuses on rapid medical assessment and stabilization.
