Hall County, GA (May 19, 2026) – Five people were injured on Saturday evening after a boat exploded and caught fire at Land Shark Cove on Lake Lanier in Hall County.
According to reports, emergency units were called to the area shortly before 8 p.m. after a flash explosion erupted aboard a boat and sparked a fire. Paramedics arrived and treated several people at the scene for injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Investigators later learned from the boat owner and witnesses that the vessel’s hull blower had not been activated before the engine was started. Officials said the failure to use the blower caused fumes to ignite inside the hull, leading to the explosion and fire.
The identities of the injured individuals have not been released. Additional details about the extent of the fire damage were not immediately available.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and more details will be released as they become available.
We are thinking of those injured as they continue to recover.
How Fuel Vapor Explosions Can Happen on Boats
Fuel vapor explosions on boats can occur when gasoline fumes accumulate in enclosed engine compartments or hull areas. Without proper ventilation, these vapors may ignite when the engine starts or when electrical equipment creates a spark.
Many recreational boats are equipped with hull blowers designed to remove gasoline fumes before startup. These systems are commonly used for several minutes before starting the engine to help reduce the risk of ignition inside enclosed spaces.
Boat fires and explosions can spread quickly because fuel systems and confined compartments may intensify heat and flames. Investigators often examine ventilation systems, fuel lines, ignition sources, and maintenance records after such incidents to determine how the explosion occurred and whether mechanical issues contributed to it.
