Bourne, MA (June 18, 2026) – Two drivers were injured Wednesday morning, June 17, following a head-on collision on Sandwich Road in Bourne, with one victim airlifted to an off-Cape trauma center.

According to Bourne Police, dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a serious crash at approximately 7:33 a.m. on June 17. The collision occurred on Sandwich Road near Long Boat, just west of the Mid-Cape Connector.

Responding officers, firefighters, and Massachusetts State Police arrived to find a red 2004 Jeep and a white 2023 Toyota pickup truck that had collided head-on in the westbound travel lane. Investigators said the Jeep was operated by a 35-year-old North Carolina man, while the Toyota was driven by a 43-year-old Pocasset man.

Authorities reported that the pickup truck driver suffered serious injuries and was transported by Boston MedFlight to an area trauma center. The Jeep driver was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the Cape Cod Law Enforcement Council Crash Reconstruction Team responded to investigate the collision. Officials said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Sandwich Road was closed for nearly three hours, from approximately 7:33 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., while emergency crews treated the injured, conducted the investigation, and cleared the wreckage from the roadway.

Head-On Collisions Result in Serious Injuries

Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of traffic collisions because the force of impact is concentrated between two vehicles traveling toward one another. Even at moderate speeds, these crashes can result in significant injuries requiring advanced medical treatment.

Investigators typically examine vehicle positions, roadway conditions, driver actions, and physical evidence from the scene to determine how a vehicle entered the opposing lane of travel. Crash reconstruction specialists may also analyze damage patterns and witness statements to establish the sequence of events.

When serious injuries occur, specialized investigative teams are called to assist local authorities in determining the factors that contributed to the collision.
