Why Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Are Often Severe
Pedestrian crashes on interstates can cause major injuries because vehicles are often moving at highway speeds. A person on foot has no protection from the force of impact, which can lead to head, arm, leg, chest, or internal injuries.
Early morning crashes might also involve reduced visibility. Darkness, headlights, and fast-moving traffic can make it harder for drivers to see a person near or inside the travel lanes.
After a pedestrian is hit on a highway, medical crews often focus on serious trauma first. Head injuries and severe arm injuries may require rapid hospital care, especially when a helicopter is used to shorten transport time to a trauma center.
