Road Construction Zones Can Create Serious Risks for Flaggers
Flaggers working in construction and roadway work zones face significant risks because they operate close to moving traffic. Their role often requires standing near active lanes while directing drivers through changing traffic patterns.
Crashes involving workers can happen when drivers fail to slow down, become distracted, or do not notice traffic control instructions in time. Larger vehicles such as trucks may also require more stopping distance, especially in areas with limited room to maneuver.
Construction zones can change quickly throughout the day as equipment, cones, and lane closures shift positions. Reduced speeds and increased attention are often necessary in these areas to help protect workers and drivers alike. Many roadway incidents involving flaggers occur during active traffic movement when visibility and timing become critical factors.
