Independence, MO (January 3, 2026) – A deadly pedestrian crash occurred on January 1 along the westbound lanes of I-70 near mile marker 18 in Jackson County. The collision was reported at approximately 8:46 p.m., drawing a response from local emergency crews and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Responders arrived to find that a westbound 2024 Ford Bronco had struck a 17-year-old male pedestrian in the roadway. The vehicle, driven by a 27-year-old woman from Independence, sustained extensive front-end damage and was towed from the scene by Elite. Despite swift intervention, the teen from Oak Grove was pronounced deceased at the scene at 8:41 p.m. by Trooper A.K. Booker. He had not been in a vehicle at the time of the crash and was classified as a pedestrian. The Jackson County Medical Examiner responded and confirmed the fatality on site.

Multiple agencies, including Troop A, Blue Springs Police Department, and Independence Police Department, assisted with the investigation and scene control. Traffic in the area was impacted while authorities worked to document evidence and secure the roadway. The crash remains under investigation as officials continue reviewing all contributing factors.

We send our deepest condolences to the family of the young man who lost his life in this tragic incident.

Pedestrian Fatalities in Missouri

Pedestrian crashes on Missouri highways are rare but often devastating when they occur. The January 1 incident on I-70 is a grim reminder of the risks pedestrians face near high-speed roadways where drivers may have limited visibility and reduced reaction time. Although pedestrians are legally prohibited from walking on interstates, some may end up on the road due to breakdowns, confusion, or emergency circumstances. Tragically, such environments leave little margin for survival when collisions happen.

This fatal crash, the first of 2026 for Troop A, highlights the continued need for public awareness and education regarding highway safety. Motorists are urged to remain especially vigilant in poorly lit areas, during nighttime hours, or near construction zones, where pedestrian presence, though rare, is still possible. For law enforcement and emergency services, incidents like this also underscore the importance of coordinated multi-agency response and rapid medical intervention.
