What Are the Dangers Faced by Roadside Workers and Cleanup Crews in Missouri?
People working along Missouri highways face significant risks from passing vehicles. Even on roads with wide shoulders, workers on foot are highly exposed, particularly when traffic is moving at highway speeds. Drivers who are distracted, fatigued, or not paying attention to their surroundings may not notice a person on the roadside until it is too late.
Missouri, like many states, has laws requiring drivers to slow down and move over when they see workers or emergency vehicles stopped along the road. These rules apply to any situation where people are present on the shoulder. Despite these protections, roadside fatalities involving workers and pedestrians continue to occur across the state each year, highlighting how dangerous highway edges can be for anyone on foot.
