Emergency Vehicle Safety During Active Responses
Emergency vehicles responding to calls often travel with lights and sirens activated to alert other motorists. These signals are intended to notify drivers to slow down and yield the right of way when it is safe to do so.
Intersections can be especially challenging during emergency responses, as drivers may approach from multiple directions. Vehicles entering or crossing a roadway may not always see or hear an approaching emergency vehicle in time.
Because of these risks, investigators typically review factors such as traffic flow, visibility, and vehicle movement to determine how the crash occurred.
