Jay County, IN (February 21, 2026) – A 50-year-old man died on Friday evening following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of SR 18 and CR 750 N in Jay County.

The collision occurred around 7:35 p.m. on February 20. According to reports, a 2015 Chevy Silverado driven by Mark D. Bauman of rural Geneva was traveling eastbound on SR 18 when it crossed into the westbound lane. The Silverado then collided with a 2016 Jeep Wrangler driven by 39-year-old Amber R. Holloway of rural Poneto.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage in the crash. Holloway was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital with back and hip injuries. Bauman was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragic incident.

Why Lane-Crossing Crashes on Rural Highways Can Be Deadly

Rural highways like SR 18 often have higher speed limits and fewer physical barriers separating traffic. When a vehicle crosses into an oncoming lane, the result is frequently a head-on collision. These types of crashes are among the most severe because of the combined force of both vehicles.

Even a brief loss of control can lead to a lane departure. Factors such as fatigue, distraction, or road conditions may contribute, especially during evening hours. On two-lane highways without median dividers, there is little room for error.

Air transport is sometimes used in rural areas when injuries are serious, and hospitals are farther away. Quick response times and access to trauma care can be critical in improving survival and recovery after major roadway collisions.
