Johnson City, NY (January 18, 2026) – A tragic incident early on Saturday morning resulted in the death of a pedestrian following a collision on one of the busiest stretches of highway in the region. The Johnson City Police Department confirmed that the fatal accident occurred around 6:19 a.m. on State Route 17 West, between exits 70 and 71.
Authorities stated that the pedestrian was struck by a sedan while in the middle of the highway. The vehicle, driven by 43-year-old Joshua Briggs, was traveling westbound when the impact occurred. First responders arrived quickly and worked to secure the scene, but despite immediate efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced dead.
Initial reports from investigators indicate that several factors contributed to the collision, including poor lighting conditions at that early hour and the pedestrian’s dark clothing. No citations were issued to the driver, and law enforcement officials have stated that criminal charges are not currently being considered.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, as family notifications are still underway. The Johnson City Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident and has stated that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
